Renton sits just north of our Kent base, and a large share of our work there happens on hills. The Highlands, Renton Hill, Talbot Hill and Benson Hill all rise sharply from the Cedar River valley, and many backyards were graded decades ago with little thought about where the water would go. The result is familiar: soggy lawns at the bottom of the slope, mossy patios and beds that wash out every winter.
We start a Renton project by reading the site. Where does water collect after a storm? Which part of the yard gets afternoon sun? Is there a view toward Lake Washington or the Cascades worth framing? From there we plan the hardscape first, usually a patio or terrace held by a segmental retaining wall, and then the planting and lighting that bring it together. On steeper lots a pair of short terraced walls often works better than one tall wall, and it gives you planting pockets between the tiers.
In Kennydale and along the north end near the lake, homeowners often ask for a deck or covered patio that captures the view without blocking it. We plan railings, stairs and posts so sightlines stay open, and we use materials that tolerate the damp air coming off the water. Down in the valley near Downtown Renton, yards are flatter but smaller, so we focus on making every square foot useful: a compact patio, raised beds, and plantings that give privacy from the neighbors.
Renton's glacial till and clay drain slowly, which matters for plant choice. We lean on natives and adapted shrubs such as sword fern, Oregon grape, red-flowering currant and evergreen huckleberry, which handle wet roots in winter and dry spells in summer. Where a lawn keeps failing, we will be honest about whether it is worth rebuilding or whether a planted bed or a gravel garden would serve you better.
