Mercer Island packs a remarkable range of properties into a small area. Waterfront homes along the shoreline look straight onto Lake Washington, while neighborhoods like First Hill, Mercerwood and the South End sit among tall conifers and ravines. East Seattle and the North End mix older homes with newer rebuilds on tight, sloping lots. Each setting calls for a different kind of landscape.
The island's tree canopy is one of its defining features, and we treat it that way. When we design on a wooded Mercer Island lot, we plan patios, paths and walls around established trees, keep excavation out of critical root zones, and choose shade-loving plants that thrive under a high canopy: ferns, rhododendrons, sarcococca, vine maple and woodland perennials. The goal is a garden that looks as if it belongs under the firs, not one that fights them.
Many island homes sit on steep grades, especially along the shoreline and near the ravines. Terraces held by stone or block retaining walls create level outdoor rooms, and broad steps connect them in a way that feels natural. We plan drainage carefully on these sites so runoff is managed rather than sent downhill toward the lake or a neighbor's yard.
Because access on the island can be limited, with narrow driveways and quiet residential streets, we plan deliveries and equipment to keep disruption low and the neighborhood tidy. We also know that many Mercer Island families want a yard that is beautiful without being high-maintenance, so we pair the design with efficient drip irrigation and plantings that settle in and look good year after year.
